The Missouri River is perhaps the finest rainbow trout fishery in Montana. It's a tailwater river
that resembles a giant spring creek. Of the 5000 catchable fish per mile 80% are rainbows,
the rest are browns. The rainbows we catch average about 17 inches, while the average
brown is somewhat larger. There are almost 100 browns between 20 and 35 inches in every
mile of the river.
The river has tremendous hatches of baetis, caddis, midges, tricos, pale morning
duns and psuedocloens. Hopper fishing can be exciting. Streamer fishing can yield some
very large fish.
We use only the most comfortable drift boats that provide stable casting platforms and
easy access to every fish in the river. We park our boats and wade fish the river in many
areas.
Spring fishing (pre-runoff) is a time of midge and baetis hatches. Summer brings
fabulous caddis, pale morning dun, trico and psuedocloen hatches. Fall baetis hatches
can bring many of the fish to the surface, while hopper fishing is the mainstay. Streamer
fishing can be good all year but peaks in the fall. When the air temperature allows we
have great fishing in the winter primarily on scud and streamer patterns, although midge
hatches provide some good dry fly fishing.
